Fifth Comparative Essay

Write a five- to six-page reflection essay comparing how Gerald of Wales’ Topography of Ireland and the Lais of Marie de France portray the human and natural worlds. Your essay should (a) describe the geographies covered by each author; (b) define and describe the primary forms of human relationship covered by each author; and (c) describe the ways each author defines and describes the natural world and the place of human relationships in it.

In addressing this prompt, bear in mind the Gerald and Marie were both writing for the court of King Henry II of England, and the Anglo-Norman elite more broadly; and that Brittany, and portions of Ireland, had only recently been conquered by Henry II at the time Marie’s Lais (ca. 1170 CE) and Gerald’s Topography of Ireland (first drafted in 1187 CE) were written.
