Assignment 2: Learner Narrative The purpose of this assignment is to invite you to consider the experiences, beliefs and values that have shaped your life as a learner. Our beliefs, values, and attitudes exist on an unconscious level until we examine them and recognize their influence on the decisions we make in our teaching and personal lives. As reflective practitioners, it is important that we reflect on our experiences and critically examine our beliefs, values, and attitudes to determine whether they are congruent with our actions as educators. In preparing your Personal Learner Narrative Reflection, please read “The stories we live by: Exploring you personal learner narrative” and follow the protocol that is described in this document, as follows: Life Chapters Key Events Significant People Future Script Stresses and Problems Personal Ideology or Philosophy Life Themes You should consider this protocol as a guide feel free to explore all of it or just one part of it. If you wish, you can also add areas that may relate more specifically to your story. This assignment contains two parts: Writing a learner narrative reflection (approximately 500-750 words; 2-3 pages, double spaced) – to begin with write as much as you can and then edit it down later to the required word length Writing a reflective commentary (approximately 500-750 words, 2-3 pages, double spaced) After you have completed your personal narrative reflection, write your reflective commentary by following these guidelines: Read and re-read the narrative carefully and a number of times. Think of the narrative as a story. How do you tell your story? What is your narrative tone (optimistic, pessimistic, descriptive, tentative, questioning, etc.). Focus on how the narrative is constructed and what it achieves rather than the facts of the story. Record any ideas that come to you as you read through the text (make notes in the margins, underline or use coloured highlighters to identify different themes or interesting features). Search for patterns among the themes (i.e., types of vocabulary used, recurring ideas or activities, feelings, people, events, etc.). Are there common patterns or contrasting ones? Key changes over time? Look for metaphors, images and symbols in the narrative and think about what meanings and assumptions they convey. Think of the historical, social, political and cultural context in which your story takes place. How might this context have influenced events in your story? Do you think the way people interpreted these events (you or others) might be different today? Why or why not? Remember, the goal is to examine your own beliefs, values and attitudes as expressed in your narrative. Think about what you have learned about yourself from this reflective commentary.
