Food feature

Sources are from my family and the book called My Gabai grandmother from Saga.

Public Relations professionals and journalists write feature articles with common elements: narrative opening (the hook), nut graf (or directional thesis), noteworthy material, description, narrative elements, evocative details, and good transitions. Some of these skills you have already practiced; others are new and need your attention.

This assignment is in two parts, and you will submit it in two different formats: written and sound. The total is 30% of your grade. The text is 20% and the audio is 10%.

For the text: write a food feature of 5 pages, using 4-6 sources, in which you synthesize personal experience with research that expands the meaning of the personal. The experience can be a fleeting one or it can be more solid, but in either case it must show a narrative arc, and a past-to-present movement. The sources can be interviews, material from popular culture (films, tv shows, songs), and the writing of others. Use these sources to create a conversation rather than prove a claim, to open your experience to a larger meaning. So you dont let your material take you away, make sure that you choose one+ purpose of the nine possibilities of the directional thesis (consult your slide deck); make that purpose your guide; generate a guiding question from it, if that is possible.

For the audio portion: Prepare a 4-5 minute segment, using the same sources as the text and formatting it as a TED Talk or, if you are more ambitious, as Harry Wood showed us in his Saturday presentation, with sound effects and interviews clips. The important thing is to know (and show) that the audio portion is not a reading of the text but a re-casting of your material in sound. Think of it as a sonic feature. Think of sound and silence, pacing and intonation, cadence, and rhythm. All these for the purpose of turning your text into a sound essay.
