This essay should not only take seriously the issues and themes central to this course, but also incorporate works of criticism both discussed in class and researched. The paper must focus on “freedom” in art. Art possesses a kind of freedom despite being subject to all kinds of political, social, and economic forces. What does that freedom look like beyond the claims made by a single artist? What does that freedom look like in a particular film, novel, or painting? Money, Power, and Art are the big themes here, so include stuff about that at certain points. But the main focus should be freedom in art.
There is an annotated bibliography provided under Additional Materials. This was written as the first part of this assignment. Use this to access the sources you must use for the paper. You must use all 5, as well as the 2 extra sources provided under Additional Materials called “Harvey, Brief History of Neoliberalism” and “Brown, Autonomy”. It is ESSENTIAL that the Harvey and Brown articles are included in this essay, please do not forget.
If you need any extra info at all please let me know. The 15 page limit is going to be difficult to hit, but please do it without being too obvious about stretching the essay out.
