Please respond to two of the students class post below:
I am taking on topic two; against gamma irradiation. This was tough decision to make. I could not find a lot of research proving that gamma irradiation is directly bad. I did find that the practice of gamma irradiation has only been going on for 30 years (FDA). In the grand scheme of things 30 years is not a long time to study its effects on the human body. Especially on people who have been eating gamma radiation exposed foods for their entire life time (30 years of age). I do think that the extension of shelf life on foods is good for the general health of products. Particularly, for people in areas where fresh produce is hard to come by. Questions I have but could not find specific answers to is what is the yearly diagnosis of cancers since 1990 and at what age group did more people start getting diagnosed? I think that is a question that may not be answered with research and data for a few more decades. I think they are safe at the time being but I still stand against it because I just dont feel like enough time has passed since the treatment has been introduced. – Brooke
2. I choose topic 2, being against gamma radiation of food, just because no one else has yet at the time I started my post and research.
Would you eat gamma-irradiated strawberries?
I would not eat gamma-irradiated strawberries, even if they were organically grown. Gamma rays can pass completely through tissues and create ionizations that damage tissue and DNA (United States Environment Protection Agency, 2019). Ionizing radiation has so much energy that it knocks electrons out of atoms. This effect on the atoms of living things, such as strawberries, poses a potential risk (United States Environment Protection Agency, 2021). Exposures to low levels of radiation does not create immediate health problems but can be a contributor to long-term health effects such as cardiovascular disease and cancer (United States Environment Protection Agency, 2021). – Sarah
