Read “Eveline” by James Joyce and “The Stranger” by Katherine Mansfield, and write your essay using these two stories. Use one or additional source.
This essay, like all the essays for this course, is a literary analysis essay. This means you should be making an argument about a message you think the story sends. Make sure that you are making an argument and not simply summarizing the text. The things that happen in the story should be like the evidence that proves your argument right.
For a short story some of the elements you will have to consider are plot, characters, setting, and tone. You might also want to think about which characters the story wants you to like and identify with and which characters the story wants you to criticize. If you are writing about gender, does the story approve or disapprove of the instances of sexism it shows?
Topic : Gender Do these stories reinforce or undermine sexist attitudes? Do the stories themselves criticize or approve of the examples of sexism they highlight?
