Purpose:
The goal of this speech is to choose a current events topic to persuade to our class. Think of this as a persuasive speech where you will argue in favor or against your topic. This is an individual speech.
Informing audiences about new ideas and concepts is all well and good, but for ages, public speaking has been used for another purpose: persuading audiences to take action. From politicians to teachers to leaders of social movements, persuasion is used to educate and motivate. For this 7-9 minute presentation, you will deliver a persuasive speech about an issue.
The topic you choose will depend on your interests, but it should be related to a current event issue. For example: Going green, or environmentally friendly business and consumer practices, or other broader topics.
Basically, issues that affect the lives of you and your classmates, and concerns you consider being problems in need of a solution. Explore the issues facing your community or school to get a sense of whats both relevant to your peers and worthy of a 7-9 minute presentation. Consider both local and global issues. You should be prepared to persuade your audience to do something that they can enact (and actually do).
Your speech should be recorded and submitted in Canvas discussion.
General Information:
1. Things to consider when selecting a topic:
Pick a topic you are passionate about! This will help you be successful in delivering your speech.
Select a topic that is appropriate given the length of the speech.
The topic should be relevant to the demographics of the audience based on gender, race, ethnicity, culture, age, etc.
2. You are using Monroes Motivated Sequence as the speech format to argue your point.
Outline & Speech Requirements:
1. Within your speech, you must use examples and facts, at least 1 quote, and at least 3 statistics.
2. Minimum of 10 sources for your outline. The sources can be: websites, magazines, academic /science journals, books (online and paper/hard back), and newspapers. You cannot use Wikipedia. You must site a minimum of 5 of your sources in the speech. You can do this by saying: According to Fisher 1 out of 3 people who. A list of your references will be turned in (typed) in APA format with your outline.
3. You must use the Monroes Motivated Sequence format to organize your outline and speech.
4. A visual aid must be shown at an appropriate time during the speech. A visual aid can include graphs, pictures, props, models, charts, short video and/or objects.
5. I am expecting to dress appropriately (your clothes should not distract from your presentation).
6. Obviously, I will grade the strength of your argument as well as how you deliver your speech.
7. Your outline needs to be typed, double-spaced, and in 12 point font. It will be submitted to the Canvas site.

Monroes Motivated Sequence
The purpose of this outline is to help you organize your thoughts and ideas into a persuasive speech. It will help you arrange and format your main points and sub-points so that your speech motivates your audience to think or act in a specific manner. Your Persuasive Speech Outline is worth 100 points. Your outline should be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, and follow class directions. You should follow Monroes Motivated Sequence to organize a persuasive message. It should be written in APA format and have a minimum of 10 references; those references should be typed and listed on a separate page.
Your outline should be clean and easy to read/follow. I will grade your outline for both content and format. I will grade what you say, how you organize what you say, and also your grammar, spelling, and punctuation (G/S/P). I will grade how you use evidence and implement it into the outline. I will evaluate how persuasive you are using ethos, pathos, and logos to make your argument. I will also grade how closely you follow proper outline format and subordination. (Do your main points align? Are your sub-points consistent?) I will review that all 10 references are on the reference page (5 in-text). It is a FULL SENTENCE OUTLINE (not an essay with paragraphs or a simple notecard).
A title page is not necessary. This outline is graded for both content and format. I will mark down for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. I will evaluate the main points you make in your outline, how you support your main points with evidence/examples (sub-points), and I will grade how you say it (G/S/P). You should always proofread your assignment at least twice- once for content and once for format. Remember that proofreading can only improve your grade.
