The assignment is a review paper explaining how an everyday behavior is studied in the cognitive psychology literature. The behavior I chose was showering and the automaticity revolving the routine. I wanted to focus on how when showering, everything done- wet hair, shampoo, rinse, shampoo again, rinse, condition/hair mask, body wash, rinse, face wash, rinse, etc- doesn’t take much/any thought. I did a lot of research on procedural memory for this behavior.
I attached the annotated bibs I did for some articles I found related to how procedural memory is studied, but they honestly suck so I added the papers and some extras as well. If the writer finds better articles or can think of a different way this behavior might be studied in cognitive psyc other than procedural memory/habits/automaticity, please feel free to use different sources. I could not find any articles specifically related to the cognitive psychology behind a shower routine, but this paper just has to explain how it might be studied in this field.
from my ta: “That is a good daily behavior and procedural memory is a good corresponding cognitive process. You may not find research articles published on that behavior in particular since it is so specific but you will definitely find LOTS of articles on procedural memory. You will just need to discuss how that research article on procedural memory relates to your daily behavior in general. You can say something like about how its something that you do without putting much thought into it. Its kind of automatic in a sense.”
