Prompt: The power of the visual:
This poem was used in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral, released in 1994. Like the title states, the movie contained four weddings and a funeral, with the same characters attending the events. The funeral part of the movie was due to the death of Simon Callow’s character Gareth, partner of Matthew, played by John Hannah (Jonathan in the Mummy franchise). Matthew recites this poem at Gareth’s funeral (follow link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MNijTHw4WI)
How does having a visual affect your experience with this poem? Does it improve it or detract from it: how? Explain how your views of the poem changed or didn’t change between reading it and then watching it. If they changed, what specifically affected your reading (use evidence from both the poem and the video to justify your point). Does the gender of the speaker affect your reception (ie. if you expected the poem to have a female speaker, does Matthew’s voice negatively affect your response to the poem or not)
