What is a close reading essay? A close reading analysis or explication is the careful unfolding of meanings in a literary work or part of a literary work.
Paper is about the text itself, not about the text’s subject matter.
The paper needs to be an analysis in which you take the author’s work apart to examine the different components and then put them back together.
Youll be examining the author’s main points and how they are connected and critiquing the author’s argument.
I have chosen a passage from the short story for you to use as a springboard to write your Essay. Examine this passage in the context of the overall story. The passage of the story used is in the instructions document.
Directions:
First, do a close reading of Harrison Bergeron and annotate the entire short story. Then, go through the assigned passage (that Ive indicated above) line by line, even word by word, focusing on details a casual reader might miss and show how a works smaller parts contribute to the whole short story. Note how the setting, plot, character description, and their relationship to each other, conflict, and themes are spelled out in the passage and how they tie in with the overall short story. How is the story delivered, through dialog, narrative, a combination of both or another way? Who is the narrator? Who is the storys intended audience? Do you feel empathy for any of the characters? Are they believable?
Describe the literal and figurative language the writer uses. Do you notice anything meaningful that isnt obvious to the casual reader whether its a major theme suggested by a symbol or a small hint contained in one word? Does the author use irony; if so, how?
Comment on how this story, written in 1961, might apply to todays society. What other conclusions can you draw about the above passage and how it fits with the overall story.
You may select another passage from Harrison Bergeron as the springboard for your essay (rather than the one I have picked. However, if you do so, please pick a passage of no more than 20 lines and run it by me for approval. If you choose your own passage, look for a key scene, a critical conversation, a statement of theme, or an opening or closing paragraph.
Please put the passage you are using at the top of your essay after your essay title and transition into your introduction. We will examine a similar sample essay in class.
Remember to examine the passage you use in the context of the whole story about Harrison Bergeron. Develop a thesis statement based on that point which should become the focus of your essay. You may use additional sources, but remember to cite them in parentheses in the body of your paper and in the works cited section at the end.
How to Write a Close Reading Analysis Essay:
1. Read with a pencil (or a pen) or annotate using your computer. Which means to take notes; mark up your text with your initial reactions, questions, ideas. Use underlining, highlighting, marginalia, outlining, etc.
2. Review your notes looking for patterns, themes, plot points, character development. Write these connections down in complete sentences and paragraphs.
3. Include direct quotes that support the patterns and themes you have noted.
4. Review all your material and determine what main argument you are making. State it in a single sentence. This is your thesis statement.
5. Write a paper supporting your thesis.
6. Revise and edit and rewrite as many times as you can.
