Brief Description of The Result of My Work Environment Assessment
I am working in a psychiatric hospital and using the Clark Health Workplace Inventory, it ranks 40 for my unit, which is unhealthy or not civil based on the assessment. My workplace is not civil because of the poor communication among staff and with patients at times. Within an organization, all workers should feel appreciated (Marshall, 2017). Most of the employees indicated that the failure of the administration of creating a healthy workplace and rebellious patients made the working environment difficult. Communication among staff and patients was not sufficient. The lack of respectful and transparent communication made employees feel that the unit was not a great place to work unless changed. Working in a psychiatric health facility can sometimes take a toll on the staff, especially when met with rude, disrespectful, or discourteous patients.
A Situation Where I Have Experienced Incivility In My Workplace.
I have witnessed several aggression cases directed to either colleagues or patients. In one case, a patient was continually making harmful actions toward the staff on duty with the intent of humiliating him. The staff got offended and distressed by the actions and yelled at the patient. This action compromised his ability to offer care for the patient. The administration should ensure that all workers are protected from workplace conflict and work to ensure a healthy work environment for both staff and patients (Boyd,2019). Another case of incivility that I experienced om my unit last week was when a physician in my department cursed at a nurse when she called on the phone with questions about medications. This behavior makes the nurse hesitant to call again and block communication that is an essential tool in the health care field. In that situation, civility is the priority; the physician’s behavior was not acceptable. It could be of harm the patient by not deliver proper information regarding the medication issues.
How Was The Situation Addressed?
A meeting was called with o the nurse, the physician, and the management team. The physician apologized and admitted his behavior was uncivilized. However, communication with peers and managers is a direct threat to patient safety. Civility can reduce medical errors, improved patient satisfaction, and enhanced hospital reputation. When patients are not happy with the care they received, they share their negative experiences with others.
Conclusion
In a civil environment, patients are healthier as teams function more effectively. Clark suggests that the administration reward and appreciate workers’ commendable behaviors to attain civility in a psychiatric health facility. Notably, both workers and patients should have training on treating others with respect and being civil. Lastly, regardless of one’s position or status, the administration should hold anyone accountable for his/her actions to create a civil culture within the facility.
