Over the past few years and particularly in the past weeks there has been considerable controversy over public monuments. In the United States and beyond, there is vigorous debate over whether monuments commemorating contested public figures should come down. In future, its possible that we will no longer see our towns and cities dotted with bronze figures. Instead, we are more likely to see innovative projects like the National Memorial for Peace and Justic (Links to an external site.)e (Links to an external site.), a monument in Montgomery, Alabama, that is dedicated to the legacy of enslaved Black people. Instead of bronze figures to venerate, the monument contains lists of the names of all those who were lynched in acts of racial violence across the United States. The names are listed by county on individual slabs which hang from the ceiling. In some sense, it is a record of shame but each county can redeem themselves and have their slab removed (and reinstalled elsewhere) if they can prove that they have taken steps to address racial injustice in the present. Ingeniously, this is a monument that, if successful in recalling the past, will disappear! The question I would like to ask you is this. How would you like to see the great historic figures of the past and future commemorated?
