2) Pick a topic in U.S. history between 1877 and 1965 from the chapters we’ve read from Global Americans. The topic must be substantially covered in Global Americans so that you can find a lot to discuss when you get to the bulk of the paper, which is your analysis of primary sources related to the topic of your choice. Professor Kurashige recommends that you look at the B-heads in Global Americans for topics of appropriate scope for this paper. I also recommend that you run your ideas for a topic by me so that you can get some feedback on if your topic is to broad or too narrow.
3) In Paper 2, you must analyze the primary sources you identify as a set and not just individually. This means that when selecting your primary sources, think about how they relate to one another and help you make your argument about the topic as presented in Global Americans (we call this a “corpus of sources” in history). Keep this in mind when searching for primary sources. Identifying a corpus of sources is difficult, but it will be easier if you have some sense of your topic before you begin your search for sources. Don’t dive into primary source searching and research blind. You’ll move quicker in searching for sources and analyzing them if you’ve done the pre-work of researching your topic and examining how that topic is covered in Global Americans. Section Assignment 3 will serve as some of this pre-work.
