At the beginning of the story, a detached third-person objectively describes the setting, environment and conditions of life in Dublin, Ireland. Then it switches to first-person narrator-the boy. We learn about his feelings for Mangan, the struggles he faces in trying to impress her and his unsuccessful attempt at figuring out what is happening to him and why he feels this way since there is no role model or a trusted person he can consult. At the end, we see him as an adult reflecting on the past with “anger” and “anguish” because of the epiphany.
