Part 1. Compare maps using data in attached pictures for race and poverty across three different decades for hometown and record major changes you see. What do trends/changes look like in the central city, inner ring suburbs, outer ring suburbs, rural areas? Speculate about the changes seen. (Gentrification, and zoning practices of government etc) what caused these demographic shifts? What major events occurred during those periods of time? Developments in the downtown area? Public housing construction or demolition? Shopping malls? School choice/redistricting? Major local or federal policy? Suburban growth? Come up with at least two possible explanations and use at least one an external source to verify each. Using the Opportunity Atlas website: ” https://www.opportunityatlas.org/ In the second part of the assignment, you will do research on your local neighborhood (CAPITOL HEIGHTS) and compare it to the nation and West Baltimore, and you will compare it across family income groups(VERY SIMILAR INCOMES) . Tell the story of the data, as if you were talking to the Department of Planning or the Mayors Office (total for Part A is about a paragraph, total for Part B is about a paragraph). Comparing Your Tract with the Nation Using the Opportunity Atlas, explore how children growing up in your census tract fare in terms of household income as adults(ON AVERAGE THEY HAVE LOWER INCOMES) . First, locate your census tract by entering it into the search bar. Then record median income for all children who grew up in your tract (you will have to select this as an option in the top right cornerall children, all gender, all race). Make sure the bottom right hand corner comparison group is selected as EVERYONE. Also record the percent minority, the poverty rate, and one other tract level characteristic you think is predictive of childrens income(FAMILY INCOME) Note how the earning in your tract compare to the nation, by recording where in the earnings distribution your tract sits (this is the bar on the left). Mention this in your paragraph. Next, compare the income for children from high and low income families in your tract (you will do this by selecting high and low income from the upper right hand) Adding a Baltimore Comparison Finally, do the same comparisons for income and neighborhood characteristics (race, poverty and the third one you selected) for Census Tract #1501 (West Baltimore, Sandtown-Winchester). Describe any similarities/differences between the incomes of all children in the US, and all children raised in your census tract, and all children raised in West Baltimore (remember to select EVERYONE in the bottom bar when looking at Baltimore).
