Key Assignment – Cultural Autobiography

Assignment Prompt
You must understand yourself as a cultural being and understand your cultural background in order to effectively understand your students cultural backgrounds and work with them in culturally relevant and sensitive manner. You will reflect upon your cultures values, norms, beliefs on which you were raised and your experience with diversity as a child. You will also reflect upon your exposure to diversity in educational, social, and professional settings as an adult.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to gain a deeper understanding of who you are culturally (in the broadest sense of the word), and as an educator: how you came to develop your values and beliefs and what is significant about your life experiences, particularly your educational experiences. These experiences constitute the screens through which you view the world. This assignment is designed to help you understand and address any biases or assumptions you may take into the classroom (or other work environment) with you.
For this assignment, present a paper that explores who you are and why.
What do you think are the opinions, beliefs, assumptions, stereotypes, and biases that serve to form you and your opinions, and, even more importantly, where do you think they come from?
