The industrial revolution in America in the late 19th century led to the mass production of consumer and capital goods while creating a new class of entrepreneurs referred to as industrialists. A relatively small number of men were responsible for transforming America into an industrial giant often at the expense of their competition and employees. The first site is from The Atlantic Monthly magazine first printed in 1881 chronicling the ruthless business practices of Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller and others. The second site is an essay written by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie entitled The Gospel of Wealth in which he describes the role of the wealthy and philanthropy in America. As you read the documents consider the pros and cons of the actions of these men
1. What types of practices were employed by these men to create monopolies? Are any of these methods used today and if so cite examples?
2. What distinction did Carnegie make between philanthropy, the gospel of wealth, and the charity that he saw being practiced by other industrialists?
In 1892 a new political movement known as the Populist Party generated enough interest and support to nominate a presidential candidate. Their objectives/ goals were known as the Omaha Platform which contained many new ideas that could be categorized as progressive in nature. As you read their plat form consider if their goals were realistic or idealistic and if any of its points are applicable today.
