Five paragraph minimum. Must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a clear thesis statement, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

Each essay must be typed in Times New Roman size 12. No heading. It must be double-spaced. One-inch margins on all sides.

PLEASE MEET THE REQUIREMENT ON THE FOLLOWING RUBRICS :

A strong essay will
1. Begin with a purposeful introduction paragraph that establishes the broad strokes of the idea you intend to explore and set any necessary terms for your discussion. It will assume I know the story of The Things They Carried and therefore avoid plot summary. This
introduction will end with a clear statement of the idea you intend to explore in this essay.

2. Transition to at least three well-structured body paragraphs. These paragraphs will begin with discussions of a main idea (with some elaboration) before any textual evidence is offered. The evidence (which may be either direct quotes or paraphrases specific enough to
require page numbers) will be introduced, cited, and explained. All evidence will be analyzed extensively and thoughtfully for its relevance at a ratio of about 3:1. Each paragraph will not simply end, but transition to the next idea.

3. Never, ever include the phrase this quote shows. It will also avoid referring to quotes as quotes.

4. Focus on how OBrien employed specific literary techniques to illustrate or reveal his theme through the things he writes about. It will not treat the characters as if they were real people or the plot as if it actually happened.

5. Not use excessively long quotes for the sake of padding out the length and hitting the required page count. All quoted material will be worked with extensively.

6. Be thoroughly proofread for grammar, spelling, and punctuation issues.

7. End with a purposeful conclusion. We will talk about hourglass format for conclusions in class.
