Call of the void – your mind imagines the worst possible outcome for a situation. For example, when driving you imagine crashing or when on top of a tall building you imagine falling even though you won’t do it. The reason your mind goes there is to prepare for that poor outcome if by chance it does occur. Novels thus could make use of this phenomenon by leaving scary things ambiguous and thus have you imagine your own worst case scenario. This makes these events scarier for each respective reader.
