Macbeth Essay Assignment

Carefully read all of the succeeding directions and options before beginning the work. Af- ter this, review the plays main events and all of the textual material handed out at the units start to supply you with enough necessary information to produce a strong paper. In particular, review your tragic hero, motif and plot event notes.
Once you have done this, please type a double-spaced four to five paragraph Baker Keyhole style essay of two-three pages in a twelve point font with a Times New Roman (or similar) font style. Be certain to include: an introduction paragraph moving from general statements to a clear and sustainable thesis relevant to the task; body paragraphs with pre- viewing topic sentences followed by three fully developed arguments logically organized and coherently related to the thesis; and, a conclusion rephrasing the thesis and the single best point of each body paragraph followed by a clincher.
Additionally, include in the essay two direct quotes from the play and two required quotes from a reputable, peer re- viewed literary analysis of the tragedy; all four of these quotes must each be at least ten words in length. For each quote, introduce it by naming its speaker, place quotation marks around it, paraphrase it if necessary, clarify its context, explain its relevance to a main point in the paragraph and, insert the act, scene and line number for words taken directly from the play (e.g., 1.4.11-14). Be sure to use parenthetical documentation with any source to avoid plagiarism and failure in the assignment; also, include a works cited page listing all sources (i.e., an internet version of the play, peer reviewed literary article, any source beyond class notes, etc.).
As you have done before, access the play from an internet website or from www.sparknotes.com.
1.) MACBETH AS A TRAGIC HERO:
Using the introductory materials specifying the traits of a tragic hero, explain how the title character is an archetypal tragic hero. Specify what traits best define this aspect of his persona and explain why this is so with source-based referen- ces to Shakespeares drama. Also, clarify who is responsible for Macbeths downfall and detail what evidence in the play supports this perspective. Finally, define how the terms hamartia and hubris relate to Macbeths experiences in the plays plot. Find research material from the internet (e.g., Google Scholar), or in the schools databases (e.g., JSTOR) supporting your belief that Macbeth is a classic model of a tragic hero.
