Choose One:
Narrative Essay
Choose a significant event or series of events. This can be from your own life, the life of someone else, or from history. Develop a thesis that is supported by the narrative, and try to offer some insight as to why the event(s) are significant. I would recommend a chronological or climactic organization for this style of essay.
Descriptive Essay
Describe an object, a place, or a person. Use physical characteristics to paint a clear picture of the subject. Develop a thesis that is supported by the description, and try to offer some insight as to why your chosen subject is important and what can be learned from examining the subject physically. I would recommend a spatial or climactic organization for this style of essay.
Requirements:
I must be able to identify your thesis. If you choose to use an implied thesis rather than a clear thesis statement, be sure that it is obvious to the reader. These are persuasive essays. However, the thesis may be something as simple as, “This event altered me forever” or “Seeing this object made me realize _____.” If you choose a historical event or object, try to explore why it is significant beyond its impact on you personally.
If you use any outside research to help you write your paper, you must cite that information and include a bibliography. Details on MLA citation appear in yourRules for Writers book.
Tips:
Pay attention to your verb tense. If needed, write out a timeline for your paper – even if you are not organizing your information chronologically, this can help you identify what tense to use.
Choose a point of view and stick with it. These papers may be written in the first person or in the third person, but consistency is key.
Employ transitional phrases/words to make smooth segues from one section of your paper to the next.
