A key component of the learning experience in History 342 is the critical review essay. This assignment will require you to read two articles that treat Native American history, the politics of memory, and the creation of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC:
Suzan Shown Harjo, It Began With a Vision in a Sacred Place in Past, Present and Future: Challenges of the National Museum of the American Indian (Washington, DC: NMAI, 2011).
Jackie Thompson Rand, Why I Cant Visit the National Museum of the American Indian Common-Place Vol. 7, No. 4 (July 2007).
Once you have done this reading, your task is to write a thoughtful 5-7-page paper that reviews the two articles and the bigger questions that they collectively address. Remember that it is not sufficient simply to summarize or respond to the works themselves; you must also identify and offer your own analysis of the questions at hand. Your paper must not only consider the strengths and weakness of each article, but you also make an argument about what you think. (For example, you will likely want to discuss your own sense of the NMAI and what its purpose and responsibilities should beand why.)
Your paper must contain the following key elements:
a strong thesis that expresses your own analytical argument
brief, thoughtful reviews of your two selected readings (no more than two paragraphs each)
evidence (drawn from readings) to support your critiques of the readings
evidence (drawn from readings) to support your own thesis
consistent attribution of cited material
an effective conclusion that does more than merely rephrase the introduction
