Occupational and career trends

Please review Chapter 15 and the D2L links (bellow) before responding to the questions below. Throughout this term, various public, private, and professional career related resources have been provided on your weekly Content links. This weeks includes a Clarion Universitys Career Services link as well as additional resources that address occupational and career trends. Please label your responses in keeping with each question and its subparts.

Note: You will need to search within your local area to find some base knowledge regarding Question #1. You can find information searching local newspaper webpages and/or other community resources online.

NOTE: FOR QUESTION #1: Make sure to consider these questions WITHOUT the current emergence of job-related layoffs and closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Certainly this situation is greatly impacting our local, state, regional, and national employment data with many temporary and/or permanent changes. However, please reflect upon your local communities PRIOR to Coronavirus changes.

Question 1 (10 points) 5 pts each: Compare employment data from the local region and the statewide data with national data. Please support your responses and cite in-textnot just your opinion. **PS I live in a small town, Brookville PA

A. Identify any recent closings or major staff reductions in local manufacturing plants or other large businesses (within 5-10 years) IN YOUR HOME TOWN/LOCAL AREA, and describe what has happened as a result to the local area/displaced workers?
**For this you may want to search online for articles/new releases about these
events (i.e. online newspapers, local government webpages)

B. Have any large employers (15+ employees) moved into your local/regional area within the past 4-5 years?
If so—what has been their impact on the local economy and employment
If not—what factors have served to prevent this new employment presence?

Question 2 (15 points): 5 pts. each

Using a variety of legitimate sources, other than the ones I have posted this week, please summarize:

A. What you determine to be the best career/occupation trends for the next 10 years in both jobs available and salary

B. What academic programs of study (majors) seem to be most promising for future employability?

C. What career/occupation trends seem least promising in both opportunities and salary growth?
Please cite in-text the sources of your information.

Question #3 (15 pts): 5 points each
Your text and various other resources that I have placed on D2L this week all offer insights and guidance regarding career and occupational trends for the next decade or so. By then, some of you will not yet have arrived at even the mid-point of your career.
The volatility of our domestic health care, Medicare, and Social Security programs as well as the economic impact of our global interdependence makes it very difficult to view the future with clarity and certainty. In the words of Alvin Toffler: “Change is the only constant”.
Toffler’s book, Future Shock (1970), was published the year I was born. Perhaps a few of you have even read it. Toffler warns about too much change in too short a period of time and addresses emerging issues in education, technology, and society/culture. Some of his concerns have been realized while others have not.
Over this semester, you have shared much about yourself including your early career fantasies, your preferences regarding career settings, and thoughts, hopes, and concerns regarding your own career path. Most of your readings this week pertain to this notion of changes in the job force. The one article entry, by futurist Thomas Frey, includes a broader view of trends for the next 20 years (as written in 2012), similar to what Toffler did in 1970. It is interesting this semester, in particular due to COVID, that this question more or less is taking a different direction. I have changed an additional article that I used to include, as it is too dated with the current climate/nature of COVID. When you read Freys article, note that these were his predictions of potential trends for 2030, which is not that far away.
Please review these Freys article in particular, and offer your own reaction to these forecasting trends by responding to the questions below. Interestingly, Freys article includes some projections that we already have been witness to (i.e. driverless vehicles). After reading Freys articles, review the 2 new articles that I added from the McKinsey Global Institute. These articles are somewhat another take on the future of employment trends and job forecasting. It will be very interesting to read over your reactions to both of these predictive takes about the future of employment.
A. What seems reasonable to you regarding Freys predictions, and which do you not subscribe to? Explain your reasonings with supportive evidence.
B. Upon reading the 2 McKinsey articles and reflecting on them (along with Freys article), make some comparisons to the trends between the McKinsey vs. Freys predictions—what similarities and differences do you see? Obviously, the biggest factor in the newest predictions has been the due to the impact of COVID, but also address what else is contributing to any of the differences you see in the predictions?
C. Are there important issues that are not addressed that cause alarm for you from these predictions, AND what is your biggest concern regarding our employment/economic/societal future?
