All of these week’s readings focus on the Bauhaus. Although they are all written for an academic audience, each takes a different perspective, makes a different argument, and represents a different form of academic writing.
Two of the articles––Meggs’ “The Bauhaus and the New Typography” and Winkler’s “Morality and Myth”––address the Bauhaus’ influence on contemporary design practice and education.
This assignment asks you to write an essay that explains which of these two articles (Meggs and Winkler) you believe
provides the most compelling argument about the influence of the Bauhaus on contemporary design practice and education.
Your essay should:
 identify and describe each article’s key argument or thesis
 identify and explain each article’s approach (i.e. historical, critical, or theoretical)
 assess the strengths and weaknesses of each article’s approach
 identify which article you believe best informs us about the impact of the Bauhaus on contemporary design
practice and education, and explain why by analyzing its argument.
