This paper is an analysis of psychopathology in popular film. Popular media and films are a rich source of material addressing psychopathology and mental illness. You will be asked to view a relevant film and write a paper that addresses the following:
1) A comprehensive description of psychopathology (symptoms) depicted, including a formal DSM-5 diagnosis of the character identified as having a mental disorder. This section must include specific diagnostic criteria for the identified disorder and use biographical information from the film that indicates how the person meets the criteria for a particular mental disorder. Identify at least of 3 SCENES in the film. Note: some characters may display co-morbidity (more than one diagnosis). Discuss no more than two diagnoses in your paper, either fully diagnosing a second disorder or discussing the need to rule-out a second disorder. THIS SECTION NEEDS TO BE THIRD-PERSON ONLY.
Tip on Diagnosis Section: do not retell the plot of the movie and do not let the patients narrative dominate the section; identify a symptom or diagnostic criteria and use information from the plot or the patients history to describe how that symptom manifested or how the criterion was met (i.e., lead with the diagnosis and support with the narrative)
2) What messages (positive or negative) does the film give to the audience about that particular disorder or about mental illness, in general? This section can be in first-person.
3) Discussion of how accurately the movie depicted the particular form(s) of psychopathology. This section can be in first-person.
The film used for this assignment must be approved by the instructor. A list of film suggestions is provided. The paper should be written using APA format ONLY, and it should approximately 5 pages with 2-3 pages dedicated to diagnosing the identified patient/client. Note: if you are diagnosing or ruling out a second disorder, that will require an additional 1-2 pages. You do NOT need to include a citation for the movie when you refer to the character, plot, or scenes, but include it on the reference list. You are required to properly (APA) cite the source you are using for the diagnostic criteria, whether it is the DSM-5, textbook, or classroom PowerPoint.
