Phenomenology within performance art

This study will focus on the philosophy of phenomenology within performance art looking at artist Mark Leckeys work. I will be discussing the phenomenology within his sound system series, relating phenomenology as an experience within viewing the work and in ritual. Bigboxstatuteaction is the exhibition I have chosen to discuss in which Leckeys sound system piece features as both sculptural and functional. I will explore how these sound systems are viewed as sculptural pieces symbolic of sound system culture and as multifunctional objects as an artwork concentrating on the displacement of them.Studying how we engage with performance analysing the phenomenology within this artwork I will ask how it functions as an art work in a displaced setting and can it be compared to as a lived experience?Looking at how we view the environment around us, I want to identify whether this piece encourages the viewer to interact or respond in a certain way, contrary to the usual environment of sound systems and how they are experienced and how they lead people to act focusing on behaviours and rituals.Following on to investigate the inherent class difference within sound system culture, for this I will reference Pierre Bourdieu. One of the key theorists I will turn to is Victor Turner to acknowledge how we react and interact with performance and the rituals we go through looking at the correlations between performance within these works. Another key theorist I will reference throughout this study is Ervine Goffman. Identifying his theory of the performed self and Impression management correlating Leckys work to these theories of looking at how the audience behaves and interacts.(Talk about frame analysis )
