The final policy paper requires students to conduct adequate research on a MCH policy of your choosing. This policy can be on the federal, state or local level. Students are required to interview at least one person who works directly in policy and provide insight to the background, fundamentals, implementation, policy and programs. Furthermore, students must provide their own analysis and recommendations for bettering the policy.
You can either come up with a detailed outline for the structure of the brief (note; if making your own outline, make sure it hits all the points required) or use the following outline as a guide for constructing your paper:
Title Page (not included in page count)
Introduction (this section can be broken down into subheadings) – What is the problem, why is it important? Give background/context: what happens, where, and who is involved? What is the cause of the current situation of the problem and what are some of the effects? How is the policy relevant to the problem? What is the aim of the policy?
Provisions Provided by the Policy- what are the main provisions the policy provides for its target population?
Proponents of the Policy- Who supports the policy and why? You can give examples of groups or individuals that support this policy and their reasoning.
Opponents of the Policy- Who does not support the policy and why? You can give examples of groups or individuals that oppose this policy and their reasoning.
How the Policy relates/interacts with other local, state, and federal policies- Is there a link between this policy and other existing policies. If so, how do they interact? Are they clashing or are they working in tandem?
Local and Global Maternal and Child Health Implications of the Policy
Conclusion/What’s Next?- give a summary of the policy and include your thoughts about the policy and how it can be improved, etc. Use what you have learned about the policy to inform your conclusion. Do you have any recommendations to improve the policy?
