Collaboration (Week Two Discussion Board)Instructions There are no pre-set prompts for you to write each of your Original Posts on. These Original Posts should be essentially a space for you to offer your thoughts and reflections on each of the readings for the week, or to provide outside information that may prove helpful for others to understand something from the week’s materials (for example, a recent news event that concerns something we’re reading). Your Original Posts should also include a question over something you found confusing or problematic within the week’s materials, as well. Your Responses should be attempts to answer at least one question per week, though youre certainly welcome to answer more! Not every Response needs to be extremely thorough, though merely stating Nice post is an insufficient response and will not receive credit. Communication Expectations–“Netiquette Guidelines” I expect each and every person to abide by common standards of civility and respect in these Discussion Boards. This means your posts should be respectful, written with care, and abide by the Principle of Charity. The Principle of Charity is: 1.) While suspending our own beliefs, we seek a sympathetic understanding of the new idea or ideas.2.) We assume for the moment the new ideas are true even though our initial reaction is to disagree; we seek to tolerate ambiguity for the larger aim of understanding ideas which might prove useful and helpful..3.) Emphasis is placed on seeking to understand rather than on seeking contradictions or difficulties.4.) We seek to understand the ideas in their most persuasive form and actively attempt to resolve contradictions. If more than one view is presented, we choose the one that appears the most cogent.More information is available here: http://philosophy.lander.edu/oriental/charity.html (opens in new window). The Principle of Charity should not, however, apply to personal attacks, or to outright offensive language…regardless of the speaker or author’s intent. As such, instances of racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, classism, and other discriminatory or rude behavior will not be tolerated. Respect for and support of each other is considered the norm, in this course.
