ESSAY
A pair of all-white, authentic Vans, with the wear and tear of my life and a new meaning to each pair, is who I am. My life is reflected on the shoes. Each pair is unique, crafted with thought and personal touches. Each pair connects to the current state of my relationship to football.
I began my football career in middle school, learning the basics of how to play. I attended De la Salle High School for part of my freshman year, a school well-known for its prestigious football program. My dreams of being the star quarterback of the school were put to test. I failed to become the starter of my freshman football team. I forecasted what the situation would be like for me the rest of my career if I stayed at the school. I decided that for the high school experience I wanted, I needed to make a change. I chose to transfer halfway through my freshman year to my local charter school. I faced many teachers, coaches and other students asking me why I decided to leave. People didn’t understand that I was making the decision to give myself the best opportunity to succeed.
I began to write on my shoes to remind myself of goals. A can of white spray paint and a black sharpie were the two ingredients to make what I called the JK 1s. I wore them to school everyday, sporting my name on the outside in sharpie over the spray paint Id added to the shoes. On the inside, I wrote Back-up Year 1 in big, bold letters. On the sole of the shoe was written the motto I stood on: Vote On Yourself. Those words became the saying that drove me. I had doubts about my decision when I reached my new school. But, like the spray paint flaking off my shoes, I began to open myself back up and started loving football again.
The second generation of the shoes said Backup Year 2. I used sophomore year to set the table for junior year. I knew that if I wanted to be the starting quarterback, I needed to work harder. I made sacrifices that I hadn’t before. Instead of hanging out with friends after school, I went to the gym or the field. Everyday I woke up early to work out before school.
Finally, in my junior year I became the starting quarterback. Everything I worked for was right in front of me. My team struggled during the regular season, only winning half of our games. I wiped clear my memory of the season, using the playoffs as a clean slate. We entered the playoffs and won five straight games and reached the California state championship. In a close game, we won the schools first ever team state championship. This experience was a culmination of all my hard work and validated my decision to change schools. I grabbed my shoes and wrote State Champ on the inside.[a] I had Vote on yourself engraved on the inside of my state championship ring.
Over my three years at the varsity level, I became a team leader. Through leading by example and being a voice for the team, I earned the respect of my teammates, and my teammates voted me the team captain junior and senior year. In my senior year, California postponed high school football due to COVID-19. All school activities were pushed off campus and regular football practice was gone. The fate of our senior year not set, I organized my team into weekly practices that we ran ourselves.
I want to bring my white vans to college to create the next version of me. Wherever my shoes take me, I’m going to learn new things and seek out new challenges. Most importantly I’m going to vote on myself.
