PSAD Philosophy of Leadership

Introduction

The major course deliverable is an extensive real-world project: an individual leadership assessment and portfolio. This project will yield a product for you to share with prospective or current employers in order to enhance your employment possibilities and promotion potential.

The Leadership Development Project Process

The personal leadership assessment and portfolio is created by incorporating targeted leadership knowledge development, self-assessment assignments, and public safety leadership analysis. The assessment represents a personal understanding and plan of public safety leadership based on the course research, textbooks, module content, discussions, reports, simulation, and your leadership performance.

These materials will form the basis of your leadership portfolio, which is a collection of your thoughts and work product such as papers, published articles, certificates, projects, letters, audio and/or video tapes, work samples, test scores, and other things related to your development as a leader.

The process requires weekly demonstration of leadership knowledge development through discussion opportunities and leadership self-assessment assignments. The submissions are assessed for accuracy and completeness against project requirements and ensure that the development of leadership knowledge, assessment, and analysis provides a maximum foundation for the sequential assessment and portfolio development. The completed personal leadership portfolio correlates with professional public safety leadership best practices, resulting in a tangible product that can become a base for future leadership development.

Portfolio content:

Philosophy of Leadership Statement (5%)
Leadership Style Summary and Identification (10%)
Leadership Skills Analysis (10%)
Public Safety Leadership Assessment (10%)
Personal Leadership Development Action Plan (10%)

The first part of the course long assignment is a Philosophy of Leadership Statement. For this portfolio entry you will examine and articulate your own leadership experiences and philosophy of leadership.

To do this you will read the assigned class readings, as well as doing your own independent research, and review your own leadership experience. You may also solicit the input of friends and family. Your finished paper will be 3-4 pages long (not including the cover page or reference page, and attachments) in APA (6th edition) format and will become the first item in your portfolio.
