The main idea discussed in this article is if double masking is effective and necessary, which in some cases it is, while others deem it unnecessary. The article discusses the two most important aspects of a mask – filtration, and fit. As we’ve learned, the novel coronavirus is an airborne disease. A mask that is considered a good fit means that there are no leaks on the sides of the mask. When there are leaks on the side of the mask, the virus can slip through. No matter what, one mask is better than no mask; however, more layers may block the virus particles because one leak in a mask can decrease the mask’s effectiveness by 50%. In general, a second layer would increase the capacity of filtration. If one layer has a leak, this layer is only 50% effective; however, adding a second layer may make it 75% effective. The article then explains the differences in choosing masks and why double masking has become so confusing. With cloth and standard surgical masks, double masking has been found to be effective. When it comes to respirators such as N95’s and KN95’s, masks over or under have been shown to decrease the effectiveness as these masks have been designed to be worn alone. In the end, it’s more important to ensure that the mask being worn provides a proper fit since a proper fit decreases the risk of becoming ill. A proper fit includes a metal nose bridge that can be secured around the nose and a mask with straps that can be tightened around the head for a better fit than just around the ears. To test if the fit is proper, an individual should feel the mask sucking in when they breathe in and an individual should not feel any air leaking out when they breathe out (Levine, 2021).
