Quantitative Research Report – Sociolinguistics

Your task is to report on how the linguistic variable you have chosen varies with regard to at least TWO social factors. You should choose these two factors based upon your reading of relevant sociolinguistic research, and on the patterns you can find by utilising preliminary analysis techniques such as crosstabs. At least ONE of the social factors should require you to do some sort of secondary coding (e.g. by grouping the variants in a variable, or by deriving a variable based on the values of several others). You will need to test the patterns you find for statistical signifincance using a Chi Square test on the effect of each social factor on the linguistic variable as well as on the interaction of the two factors on the linguistic variable. You are also required to present the patterns you find using appropriate graphs, and critically discuss these results in comparison to relevant published socioliguistic research. In your report you should provide details of the methodolgical decisions you made, such as which social factors to investigate, how secondary coding was carried out and why you might have chosen to exclude some data from your analysis.
