Queer kinships and family change in Taiwan

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #3

Each of chapters 2-6 in Queer Kinship and Family Change in Taiwan addresses a different aspect of gender non-conformity in the context of family relationships in Taiwan.

Chapter 2: generational differences in the way families address gender nonconformity: changes over time
Chapter 3: gendered forms of patrilineal family pressure and the impact of hetero-normative gender expectations within non-conformers families
Chapter 4: parents perspective on their childrens gender non-conformity: the power of social norms and expectations
Chapter 5: what normativity entails and how young people respond to the pressure to conform; the concept of strategic normativity
Chapter 6: sibling relationships in gender non-conforming families
Choose one chapter that particularly interests you and connects to your own experience in some way. Outline the key issues discussed in this chapter, and summarize any argument the author makes about these issues. Then explain how these issues (or one of the issues discussed in the chapter) connect to your own experience, and explain how your experience is either similar to or different from the scenario that Brainer describes.

Brainer relates attitudes toward gender non-conformity in Taiwan to hetero- normative family structures and the gendered expectations that these produce. You don’t have to be gender non-conforming to be subject to these kinds of family pressures. Can you relate your experiences to your own family structure and the expectations that your family generates, whether gendered or otherwise?
