Paper requirements: these are the basic requirements for each paper and a starting point for the grading rubric. Your grade is based primarily on writing a paper that convinces me you have read the book, thought about the book, and written a thoughtful, complete paper that displays critical thought and writing. The most important way to convince me you have done this is your choice and critical use of at least five (5) quotes from the book. When choosing a quote from the book, just list the most meaningful piece of it that conveys the idea or concept you are intending to support what you are writing as your reaction. I have been teaching for almost thirty years. I have seen it all. I have seen people choose five extremely long quotes so that they can meet the page length requirement without writing much of their own prose. I will not give credit for extremely long quotes. In the same vein, I have seen students use one or two word quotes to quickly amass their five. I will not count short quotes either, and any paper that has less than five carefully chosen and utilized quotes will receive a zero. I know this sounds harsh, but it is crucial to understanding the complexity of the material in this course that each student reads these three books in addition to the textbook.
Paper should be at least five pages in length following the standard format for college papers: typed, double-spaced, one inch margins, 12 point, Times New Roman or the default font on your device, black ink on a white background.
The assignment:
1. Read The Age of Great Dreams by David Farber.
2. Select at least five (5) quotes from The Age of Great Dreams around which to organize your reaction paper.
3. As part of your introduction, answer the following question: What does David Farber mean by the phrase “the age of great dreams?”
4. As part of the body of your paper, why does Farber believe the United States was undertaking political, economic, and military action in Vietnam?
5. As part of your conclusion, give at least one of Farber’s conclusions about the era. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
