The readings contained in Melissa A. Goldthwaite’s THE LITTLE NORTON READER: 50 ESSAYS FROM THE FIRST 50 YEARS are opportunities for discussion about cultural, social, and values issues. The essay “collection explores the power of language and writing not only to express identity but also to change hearts and minds.” Some of the disciplines we looked at include History and Political Science (Eula Biss’ “Time and Distance Overcome,” Molly Ivins’ “Get a Knife, Get a Dog, but Get Rid of Guns,” Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant”); Social Sciences – Education (Zinsser’s “College Pressures” and Chang-Rae Lee’s “Coming Home Again”); Technology-Related Fields (Baron’s “Facebook Multiplies Genders but Offers the Users the same Three Tired Pronouns,” Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and Newman’s “To Siri, with Love: How One Boy with Autism Became BFF with Apple’s Siri”); and Life Sciences (Helwig’s “Hunger” and Mairs’ “On Being a Cripple”).
Write a well-organized critical lens essay that best describes how three readings contributed to your understanding of writing across the disciplines. Focus not only on the readings themselves, but the rhetorical strategies the authors used for that discipline, including Pathos, Logos, and Ethos, and any other forms of writing to keep the reader focused, engaged, and convinced of the argument. Keep in mind the reading’s organizational structure and the exercises at the end of each reading that were of particular interest. Most importantly, remember to identify the academic discipline, to offer a rhetorical consideration of the work, and to include the relevance of its content and the criteria met appropriate for that discipline.

With “synthesis” the reader makes connections among the constituent parts within the structure of the text. How did “synthesis” help you to determine your critical understanding of the author’s content, ultimately leading you to develop your own assertion?
How did the author(s) support their assertion? Through what rhetorical devices? How did the author’s rhetorical strategy help you to become a better writer? Did the tone or attitude of the work contribute to your understanding of the reading? How so?
