Your final project is a 8-10 page argumentative essay. Per the syllabus:
Argumentative Essay (40% of grade)- This is the final project for the course. Students will be working on this essay throughout the semester. This essay requires you to research a theme from the course, and collect and evaluate evidence in order to establish a position in both a concise and convincing manner.
FORMATTING
While there are many citation methods across the disciplines, I want you to use Chicago style footnoting + bibliography. For the basics of this style of citation, see this “Chicago Style Quick Guide.” download
Page numbers and last name must appear in the top right corner of the document.
Times New Roman, 12pt font. Standard margins. Double Spaced. No extra spaces (that means don’t add additional space between paragraphs or after periods. I’ve seen all the tricks).
Length: 8-10 pages. This is important: Do not attempt to adjust the formatting to make your paper appear longer, I will spot that and deduct from the grade. 8-10 pages means the text must extend to the bottom of the 8th page, not just onto the 8th page. If you would like to write longer than 10 pages you will need to run that by me and make a case for why your paper must be longer.
My Thesis: – Despite treating them badly, the Spanish and the Siberians would not have been able to spread and expand their influence over new territories without the aid of the native tribes in America and Siberia who inhabited those same regions.
Audience:
Generally speaking I’d say aim to write this as if your reader:
A) Has a general understanding of the wars you are talking about. You don’t need to spend lots of space providing a blow-by-blow of the wars.
B) Probably has not read the sources you are using. So explaining what your sources are saying, what their contexts are, etc… may be useful. For example, if you are using one of the nun’s accounts from the thirty years war, you should briefly explain what information about the source and author might be relevant to a reader so they have a sense of context for the information.

For Siberian conquest source, read pages 37 to 47, the last two paragraphs of chapter 7, chapter 9, and chapter 11
For remaining sources, you can use whole document.
Look mainly for parts of the document in which the treatments of the natives by the soldiers are the main focus
For outline:
I recommend an introductory paragraph introducing the thesis, Then spend the next couple of paragraphs summarizing the siberian conquest, what the motives were, how the natives were treated, what were the results. Then mention the spanish conquest, what the motives were how the natives were treated, what were the results. Explain similarities between Ermak’s conquest in Siberian conquest and the Condado expedition in the spanish conquest. Finish with a concluding paragraph summarizing the paper and how this thesis is relevant to modern times. (Maybe connect to modern racism)
