Research and write a 3-5-page paper on a city/county, in california state of California or Federal budget process and how it relates to your department budget cycle.
The paper must include the specific timelines and terminology used during the budget process (appropriations, mandatory/discretionary spending, revenue sources, etc.). Please do not just present an overview of the budget process of your department. You should demonstrate a good overall understanding of the budget process including the politics, the community participation, and the impact of unions on the process.
Please review the handout on Public Budgets by the National League of Cities. There are also several other handouts in the course shell that will provide some good background information on the budget process. These handouts provide background information on both city and county revenues and expenditures.
Students must cite at least two sources that are provided in the handouts that are posted in the main page of the course shell.
