As stated in the subject of this post, a capstone project is a culmination of what you have learned throughout the entire MPH program. When I began the MPH program, the goal of this program was to take the knowledge obtained through this program and eventually use it in the field of Physical Therapy. When I first began the program, I knew that the goal of public health, as stated by the CDC, to protect and improve the health of people and their communities, was a goal that resonated with my vision of what I envisioned in doing with the physical therapy degree I hope to earn in the future.
When originally informed that I would have to do a capstone project at the end of the program, I knew exactly what I wanted to do my capstone on, and that was on solving the issue of the increase in substance abuse disorder amongst athletes especially soccer players. However, in knowing this from the start, I also knew that there would be difficulty in finding research on this topic, especially amongst soccer players because this was something very new that was occurring to soccer players and there were not many published cases due to the fact that FIFA, the federation for futbol players around the world did not start to pay attention to this until the recent past 10 years. In saying this, although I thought and knew that I might have some difficulty in some areas to provide an effective capstone project, I decided to focus on creating a grant proposal for much research to be conducted on what is now beginning to become an epidemic amongst athletes and hidden to the community because of the effects it will have the reputation of athletes, especially soccer players.
When I began my capstone project, I felt that it was important for me to conduct research based on other peer-reviewed articles about substance abuse disorder in athletes from other sports such as football and then incorporate this research with the information on substance abuse disorder in soccer players in order to develop an effective capstone project. For my capstone, I decided to choose to develop a grant proposal and this is because substance abuse disorder in soccer players is a health issue that needs more research it. As I have been conducting this research, I feel that I am progressing very well with the capstone project because I was able to obtain information that would be beneficial to creating an effective grant proposal for more reasons on the importance of addressing the health issue. In terms of challenges that I am experiencing currently, some of those challenges include finding research within the last few years on the effects of substance abuse among soccer players, and making sure that I have literature reviews that will help me make a valid grant proposal.
