RESPOND TO EDWINA (HER) POST

I understand that this discussion question asks us to consider constraints such as culture, income, and education. When collecting this type of information, we need to know who we are collecting the information from. Three concerns include privacy, security, and comprehension. The information you are collecting is important. Participants need to know that. They need to understand that the information being collected is private and will only be used for their benefit and in relation to the health issue being described. While participants may have a right to privacy, security is also an issue. Participants that are a threat to themselves and/or others are dangerous, and intervention needs to be set in place. Ethical fieldwork is not only about collecting information. It is also about keeping people safe from harm. If we gather information about an imminent risk, it is our job to contact local authorities.

Consumer information safety goes hand in hand with their physical safety. Practitioners cannot be afraid to report abuse or violence. Aside from privacy and security, comprehension is important. We need to be able to confirm that the information we are providing and receiving is correct and relevant. The information we are gathering will not count for anything if participants do not understand why the information is necessary and how it can help them in the future. To navigate socioeconomic and demographic information, I will ensure privacy (if they are not a threat to themselves and others). I will also confirm that appropriate safety measures are set in place for appropriate adhesion of possible behavior modifications. I will have the participant repeat everything or reiterate everything discussed in order to confirm understanding. If all goes well, those that understand the severity of the issue will be compliant and they will benefit from treatment for the health care issue.
