It is a great opportunity to be able to put together a capstone project as it allows me to use all of the knowledge I have learned throughout my master’s program into action. Thus far I am feeling good about my progress and am happy to have chosen microplastics as my topic to further expound upon my expertise in the field. I think a large part of why I am happy with my current progress is due to the layout of this course. The fact that each week’s discussion questions pertaining to certain parts of the capstone is really helpful in gathering information and getting an idea of what the rough and final drafts should look like. One of the challenges I am facing is how broad and/or narrow I should be in regards to the issues posed by microplastics. While I would like to focus more on the negative health effects they can have on humans as a reason they should be more regulated it is hard to do this without first addressing their prevalence in the environment. Simply put, I want to make sure the policy analysis is straight to the point but also follows a logical progression. The other main challenge I am facing is sorting through the information I have regarding microplastics. While it is a relatively new field and not that many articles are available the ones I did have access to through my practicum with the CDC mostly pertained to their prevalence in the environment and consumption of microplastics by animals.
