Negotiating within a new company can be intimidating initially; however, it’s not a bad idea to negotiate. Some things an individual might want to negotiate before taking a job offer are vacation time, salary, benefits, car allowance, signing bonus, promotional bonus, and more (Pelczarski, 2019). When I started my career with my current employer, I didn’t negotiate anything. Unfortunately, approximately 64% of people fail to negotiate when they get a job offer (Pelczarski, 2019). In the future, if I find myself with a new job offer, I will negotiate for a few things. The top three things I would negotiate would be salary, vacation time, and benefits. It is essential to have a job that provides enough money to take care of yourself and possibly a family. Compensation is necessary because I have a family, and I’ve worked hard to get to where I am today. Another thing that I think is important is vacation time. I’ve worked for the same company for six years and just started receiving vacation time last year. This was very tough for me because when I wanted or needed time off, I didn’t get paid. I feel that everyone is entitled to time off from work and vacation. Last, I would negotiate the benefits that come with the job such as, life insurance, health, dental, vision insurance, and a retirement plan. All of the things mentioned above are essential for my family.
