The last big decision I made was to sign a provisional contract with my company. I am currently working as a registered behavior technician for a school district. I will be graduating in June with my bachelor’s in applied psychology. My company offered me a contract to switch to the role of an emotional support special education teacher starting next school year. This contract is contingent on the fact that I graduated with my bachelor’s in June and after attending interviews with the school districts I have a district that wants to hire me. After that happens my contract will take effect and there will be an application on my behalf for emergency teacher certification and I will begin working as an emotional support classroom teacher in August when the school year starts. The biggest contributor for me when I was making this decision was the fact that I would be able to better provide for my family and also have a better sense of accomplishment when it comes to my daily working life. It has been a goal of mine to become a special education teacher for a long time. I don’t think that anything influenced me to where I would have made a different decision with this matter. This is such a positive outcome for my career and me as a person that I can’t imagine anything would have changed this decision for me. I did put a lot of thought into it prior to signing a contract because when a school district applies for emergency certification for you it requires you to be committed to that district for three years. I didn’t think twice about this decision because getting emergency certified is one of the only ways that I would have been able to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher since I cannot go through a standard program that includes student teaching.
Alternatively certified teachers have helped to reduce the teacher shortages that have been happening across the country. These programs have been seen to be an effective method of recruiting teachers in somewhat hard-to-fill areas. Some of these areas that have the biggest shortages are science, foreign language, and special education. These types of programs are able to provide a fast track into a classroom for an individual who may be seeking a career in education but unable to take the traditional route (Shaw, 2008).
