RESPONSE TO PEER

CARLS POST: As stated last week, the area of interest for me is infection control. It is a major problem in most healthcare facilities (Haque et al., 2018). One possible area of investigation is to identify if there are any correlations between the advanced training of nurses and the number of healthcare-acquired infections in a given healthcare setting. In order to protect the patients in a hospital (population), one of the possible interventions that is being investigated is the implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship program (Intervention), which provides advanced training in regards to how to prevent hospital acquired infections (File et al., 2014). Aim is to eventually identify if providing advanced training to nurses in the form of an antimicrobial stewardship program, compared to the general treatment by nurses who do not participate in the antimicrobial stewardship program (comparison). If a study would demonstrate that the average weekly number of hospital-acquired infections would significantly decrease, such as a 25% reduction or more (outcome) over a period of eight weeks (time), after the implementation of the antimicrobial stewardship program, then it would go a long way to justifying the feasibility of such stewardship programs. Therefore, the following PICOT question, in the standard quantitative PICOT format, may be used to drive such a study:

In hospital patients in a healthcare facility (Population), what is the effect of implementation of a antimicrobial stewardship program (Intervention) in comparison to not having such a program (Comparison) on reducing the average weekly number of hospital-acquired infections by 25% or more (Outcome) to be completed over eight weeks (Time).
