CONCERT REVIEW
Review of jazz, classical, rock or another genre of music
on the internet

For this assignment, you are required to listen to fifty minutes of any type of live recorded music on the internet. The concert (or concerts if you are using a compilation of videos) must feature either the same artist (can be with different collaborative musicians) or one classical ensemble/chamber group/solo artist.

Example #1 (Jazz): You pick Charlie Parker. You must listen and take notes on music videos of this artist (there will be different members in the ensembles he played with of course but Parker needs to be in all of the videos). You will likely use multiple different recordings (in other words, all will not be from the same concert). However, the music needs to add up to at least 50 minutes in duration.

Example #2 (Rock/pop) You pick Neil Diamond. You must listen and take notes on music videos of this artist (there will be different members in the background groups he sings with but Diamond needs to be in all of the videos). You will likely use multiple different recordings (not all from the same concert) but it needs to add up to at least 50 minutes of music. Do not choose the same artist/song you used for your culture paper in September.

Example #3 (Classical) You pick the Chicago Symphony. You must listen and take notes on the music played by that ensemble. It can be different music from different composers (and from different actual concerts) but it must all be performed by the Chicago Symphony. The music must add up to at least 50 minutes of music. The music should not be the precise musical selections that we have talked about already.

How do you write this review?

Your review should begin with a solid first paragraph giving us a small background on the recordings (when they were, who your artist is, introduce the selections). It is fair game, if a particular concert was featured on a TV special to mention that as well.

You will need to take notes during your listening and watching of the videos. The body of the paper is where you will tell us these observations with each selection. Your observations will often vary widely from selection to selection. It should not be I liked this, I liked that at this point. It should be observations such on items such as dynamics, pitch, instruments used, etc. Of course visual as well as aural observations are very much a part of this. I can envision sentences like the brass section played with loud dynamics and I noticed the rhythms were lively, etc. You cannot just say I liked the tone and the atmosphere was pretty at this point.

You can look up background information on your selections to help fill out the body of your paper. However, most of the content of the paper will be on your observations of the concert.

The end of the reviewthe final paragraphis where to place your opinions. Now, you can say I especially liked the performances of Save comments such as this for the final paragraph.
