The romantics loved folklore and the supernatural- ghosts, gouls, witches, warlocks, gnomes, selling ones soul to the devil, angels and fairies. It gave rise to Goth literature like Frankenstein in 1818.
In German folklore, the Erlking was a king who would lure children to his realm. But once touched by him, one dies.
