Paper Instructions: Small Group Proposal
Students will develop a proposal for a small group they would lead. Imagine that you are
submitting this proposal to your supervisors and they will give you permission and financial
resources to run this group. You can choose the specific type of group you would create
(e.g., task, psychoeducational, counseling, psychotherapy, or brief groups) and the specific
context (e.g., counseling, social work, education, or community setting) for the small group.
This proposal should be written as a paper and be 5-7 pages in length.
Small Group Proposal Paper Outline
1. Type of group
a. What is the rationale for creating this group?
b. What are the goals for this group?
c. Describe the type of group you will lead (e.g., task, psychoeducational,
counseling, psychotherapy, or brief groups)
2. Theory
a. What theoretical perspective guides the leaders of this group? Introduce the
overall theory (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Approaches) and the specific theory
(e.g., Reality Theory)
3. Ethics and Culture
a. Examine ethical/legal considerations and how you will address them
b. Examine cultural considerations and how you will address them
4. Forming a Group
a. Discuss the practical considerations in forming a group: group composition,
size, frequency and duration of meetings, length of a group, location for
group meetings
b. What are the recruitment and screening procedures for potential members?
c. How will members be oriented to this group?
d. What are some common problems you might expect from the group?
5. Evaluation

Paper Instructions: Small Group Proposal
Paper Requirements:
Your paper should be 5-7 pages (not including cover page or References)
Include a cover page with the following information: your name, institution,
course information, date, and title of paper
Your paper should be double-spaced, 12-point font, and normal margins
You will be required to have in-text citations (ASA format) throughout the paper
You will need a Reference sheet with all of the sources that you cite. Your primary
reference will be the textbook, but you can include outside sources
You will write your paper in the academic third person, rather than the first
person (I, me, we, ours). You can use language like the leader of the
group will. Write in the future tense.
