You will be required to write a final analytic paper. The paper
should explore a contemporary or historic aspect of terrorism in your assigned geographic
area (see below) and you should analyze that concept in terms of the themes, readings, and
scholarship we will consider over the 8 modules of the course.
The five Geographic Focus Areas are: Europe; the Americas (the U.S., Canada and Latin
America); the western Middle East (Israel/ Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and
Arabian Peninsula); the eastern Middle East (Afghanistan, Iran, and the Indian
Subcontinent); and Africa. Students will be assigned to one of these areas in the first
week or two of the course. Assignments will be posted on Blackboard. – (I WAS ASSIGNED AFRICA.)
KEY READING: Use at least ONE of the key readings as the basis of your paper. When
formulating paper ideas, please at least browse the final key readings from the end of the
course including Module Eight readings on old vs. new terrorism. (The Hoffman reading will be attached)
ANALYSIS: Do NOT write a straightforward descriptive (step-by-step narrative) paper,
i.e. The History of [Insert Group or Event]. Please include and emphasize your own
analysis on the subject. Some narrative is acceptable; but your own voice, thoughts, and
application of the concepts we are learning about are the central and most important aspect
of this paper. For this reason, framing your paper as a research question is essential:
RESEARCH QUESTION: Please formulate your paper topic as a research question when
proposing it (i.e., Is Al Shabaab a Terrorist Actor, per Bruce Hoffmans Definition
of Terrorism?). This will be helpful in framing your paper in a way that emphasizes
what is most important in the paper your analysis. And the narrower the better. Do
NOT try to explore a big topic. Ten pages is a very short paper. See above example of Al
Shabaab; that is appropriately narrow. Do NOT attempt to explore all of the terrorism in
all of your assigned region (i.e., The history of terrorism, as defined by Hoffman, in U.S.
history is way too broad for a 10-page paper).
FORMAT: 10 pages of writing PLUS title page and references / bibliography at the
end. Double spaced. 12 point font. MLA, APA, Chicago style (I’m not a stickler on
citing format, just make sure you cite work by other scholars either in footnotes or in the
body of your paper). Keep in mind that this is a graduate-level course, and the expectation
is that the paper will be graduate-level writing. Hence, grammar, spelling, not using
Wikipedia as a source, etc. this will all be factored into your grades.
