For this module students are required to write a methodological review based on research presented in lectures.What is a methodological review?A methodological review is critically examining research to form conclusions on the merits, value, authenticity and contribution of the research. It involves the process of examining the production of knowledge and not merely the knowledge itself.As part of being able to conduct such a review, students should include the following questions and areas in their methodological review assessment:- a discussion of the theoretical models and concepts relevant to the research,Things to consider – what theories were used? What concepts were used? Are other theories and concepts better? If so, which ones and why? Show you know that concepts and theories are contested and can be defined differently- the methodological models and concepts relevant to the research,What methods were used? Could other methods have been used? Which ones and why? What were the limitations of these methods? How do they impact validity?- the ethical and practical dimensions associated with the researchWas the research safe? Did it have the potential to harm those working on it? Or those sampled?- the findings of the researchWhat were these findings? Are these convincing? Could other concepts, theories and methods have produced different results?- substantive knowledge of the topics;what is known on the topic? Are there any things which are unusual in terms of findings? Why is it important to know more on this topic? How does it relate to the social or political context?- the relevance of the research / presented lecture to criminological knowledge and criminal justice policies;how does this research relate to social, political and legal policies / legislation?- further areas of research from the lecture given and recommendations from the research.How could you build on this research? What further research is required?Assessment CriteriaIn marking students written work, tutors will consider: the extent to which the remit of the assignment brief has been met; the accuracy with which relevant theoretical arguments, concepts and data are described; the degree to which the theories, concepts and evidence are integrated and contextualised the range of source material used; the coherence and integration of the structure of the work presented; the clarity (spelling, grammar, etc.) and technical accuracy with which ideas are expressed; the use of properly referenced sources to support the arguments made
