Proposal Topic: The effects of a Soldier’s mental health and its affect on their reintegration into society
Assignment below was assigned after topic was approved, problem statement.
Subject: A proposal to write a research paper addressing the effects of PTSD on military families.
Purpose of the Proposal:
I am writing this proposal to gain approval to do more research on a topic that is very important to me as a Soldier. I would like to research the effects PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, have on military families, rather than just the Soldier. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a disorder in which a person, in this case, a Soldier, struggles to recover from a traumatic event he/she may have experienced. In the military, those diagnosed with PTSD, are commonly Soldiers who are deployed to those areas where there is eminent danger, i.e., Afghanistan and Iraq. Families of people with PTSD can agonize from secondary strain and experience some of the same enfeebling effects of PTSD.
Statement of the Problem:
We have given service-members the entire month of June to bring awareness to PTSD and how it plagues our ranks. According to the APA, American Psychiatric Association, PTSD affects approximately 3.5% of the adults in this country. Theres an estimated 1 in 11 people that will be identified with the disorder in their life. Statistics imply that almost 20 percent of combat veterans are diagnosed with PTSD. It is vital that we continue to address the issue for both our service-members and veterans, but also acknowledging that this disorders affects the entire family. Symptoms that family members may experience are but not limited to, unhappiness, apprehension, and even substance abuse. These symptoms are usually caused by the familys attempt to care for the service-member with the disorder. Coping with the care of a person with PTSD can also cause a family to feel worn and at times, discouraged. Because stressful situations can cause frustration for service-members, families attempt to alleviate that stress by handling most situation themselves.
Solution to the Problem:
By researching this topic, I hope to bring awareness to how a PTSD diagnosis affects the family in similar ways as the Soldier. The paper will also suggest ways to assist families with coping with their family member with PTSD to prevent burnout. PTSD is treatable with medication and the availability of psychotherapy. I plan to convey how seeking treatment will improve the lives of both the Soldier and family.
Cost:
Theres no monetary cost in finding a solution to this problem, just time in researching the topic to provide relevant and factual information.
Conclusion:
Families are just as affected by PTSD as the Soldier they are caring for with the disorder. Researching how they are affected with bring more attention to families and not just service-members and veterans. By bringing attention to this topic, society, as well as the military, can become more intentional in providing more resources and becoming more vocal. PTSD directly affects a Soldier who in turns becomes a challenge for the family. Causing strain to the family enables the family to properly care for the Soldier and it is a continuously cycle.
