Paper #1: The House of the Seven Gables Analytical Compare/Contrast
For our first essay, you will compare and contrast The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne with a text of your choice. In this case, text can mean another novel, a short story we cover in class, a film, etc.. A strong essay will analyze both stories by discussing elements of fiction such as theme, tone, setting, narration, characterization, etc. The focus of your paper will be on a clear commonality; however, you may wish to contextualize this commonality within both texts by discussing differences in time, place, the authors unique viewpoint, etc. Your essay should have a clear thesis statement that asserts a major similarity between two texts that is not obvious. For example:
Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown and Jacksons The Witch both suggest that evil or human impurity is an inevitable product of age or maturity.
Be sure to fully prove your thesis by providing direct evidence (quotes and examples from the text) and synthesizing your own observations with these pieces of evidence. Essentially, your essay itself should have a clear theme or goal that you carry throughout. Youre answering the question: what do these texts have in common? BUT you also want to ask yourself what do these similarities show about both authors overall goals for writing these stories?
Finally, the focus of this course is on the witch in literature, so your essay should focus or touch upon a theme or element related to the archetype of the witch. See me if you have questions or concerns here.
